• Intensive Japanese Program


    This program is a 6-month intensive Japanese program, which aims to achieve the level of Japanese language necessary for daily life in/out of the campus.

    * The International Center develops unique curriculum for the program and provides the students with effective instructions to achieve
      "Practical Japanese."


    1. Program Eligibility
      Applicants to this program should fulfill one of the following conditions:
      • To be the recipient of Japanese Governmental Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation) and those who are required to take 6-month Japanese training before enrolling a graduate program,
      • To be a full-time/part-time UT foreign student and to be able to join all the classes and out-class activities provided under this program (Up to about 10 students)
          * Out-class activities include one-day homestay, short excursion and others.
    2. Application Period (only for UT full-time/part-time students)
      • Application Period: March 3 - April 3, 2014
        • Interview will be held after the application period. Date and time will be contacted later to each applicant.
        • For off-campus applicants (including the recipients of the governmental scholarship), application is processed through Division of International Affairs or the coordinator of this program.

    3. Notes Concerning Application
      • Basically, this program is for the students who have NOT studied Japanese language. For full-time/part-time UT student applies for this program, please understand that we may turn down the application if the applicant has ever learned the language before.
      • We notify the availability of the class after the interview. In case an application is turned down, we introduce another Japanese program that may fit the applicant's Japanese level.
      • If an applicant is accepted to this program, please be sure to advise the student to join the program orientation. The program coordinator will explain the outline of this program to the advisor of the student.
      • When a full-time/part-time UT student applies for this program, please note that the Center accepts the application by his/her advisor, NOT by the student himself/herself.
    4. Textbooks

        Please order following textbooks at UT Co-op Bookshop and purchase them before the program starts.

          * The guidebooks are also available in other languages (Chinese, English, Korean, French, Spanich, Portuguese, Thai, Indonesian and Russian).

      • Supplementary Materials
        • Instructors will give supplementary materials in their classes.
    5. Tests and Speech Demonstration
      • Tests will be held twice during the program, each one after finishing the Book I and II.
      • At the closing ceremony, all program attendants are required to make a speech in Japanese.
      • Certificate is issued upon completion of all the program.

        • * The above schedule can be changed.
          * Non-class activities, such as one-day homestay and short excursion, will be held as a part of this program.
           Please be sure to attend these activities, too.
    7. About Notification of Nonparticipation (only for recipient of Japanese Governmental Scholarship)

      All embassy-recommended recipients of the Japanese Governmental Scholarship are required to enroll this intensive program. However, in case that a scholarship recipient has already attained satisfactory Japanese level or does not attend the program due to the strong desire of his/her advisor, please contact the Division of International Affairs. We ask the recipient to fill out the Notification of Nonparticipation for the program.
    8. Others
      • Attendants have to purchase the textbooks on their own expense.
      • Attendants may be required to pay some fees for non-class activities.
      • Please understand that working part-time or taking time for research is very difficult during this program.
      • If an attendant frequently delays/misses classes or does not submit given assignments, we may advise him/her to take another program.
